Join us as we give VAMPIRE WEEKEND’s newest LP a listen. MODERN VAMPIRES OF THE CITY has a decidedly darker aesthetic than the previous two albums, and we’ve heard the band avoided some of their more base pop instincts… We have a lot of respect for this act, and so we’re going to give the new album a proper vinyl listen tomorrow! Just in time for the return of Fela! to the Ahmanson, Touch Vinyl proudly presents Music Is The Weapon. Directed in 1982 by French documentarians Stephane Tchal-Gadjieff and Jean Jacques Flori, this is perhaps the definitive cinematic document of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the inventor of Afrobeat. Filmed in Lagos, Nigeria as Kuti was fresh out of one of many prison stints, Music Is The Weapon captures live performances at his mythical Shrine nightclub, as well as the unflinching opinions and philosophies on politics, panafricanism, music, and religion that made the man such a singular threat to his country’s brutal military regime, and such a hero to the people that they affectionately dubbed him their “Black President.”

The Holy Resurrection of the West Side Music Scene //

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending ALL BANDS ON DECK, the first in a series of summer concerts put on by the fine folks at RUM & HUMBLE and SPACELAND.

Some of you are familiar with the twilight concert series at the pier, and I know you’re saying to yourself, “I really don’t need to head west to see a Peter, Paul and Mary cover band on my Saturday night”. But yesterday was far from what you’ve come to expect from Santa Monica pier. By booking popular, danceable acts, charging a ticket fee, and promoting in an honest and direct way, the pier no longer felt like a 14 y/o date idea, or hippie burnout camping spot, the ALL BANDS ON DECK inaugural show (which ran from 4pm-10pm) was in fact a very solid music festival.

After making the rounds and checking out the vendors (live screen printed mercy is cool), ample beach style bathrooms, beer garden and VIP area, I can say that what I was reminded most of my glorious times at TREASURE ISLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL in the great, and fabled San Francisco. Were the logistics perfect this first time around? No — there could have been a port-a-potty in the VIP area, and better access to alcohol and water everywhere, but the scene, with its ferris wheel sourced dream lighting and open acoustics was so good that I believe many attendees were confused…! Confusion and even skepticism in the face of something new is a normal and healthy reaction in LA. But in this case, it’s just not the right one. This series is going to be something special.

Featured acts were Kisses (who recently signed with our friends at Cascine!), Yacht and the quickly ascending, Poolside. A DFA dance vibe permeated the night, and despite technical difficulties, Claire Evans— the frontwoman of Yacht— put on a great show with help from some super upbeat, modeselektor-esque back tracks. Poolside brought their groovy James Murphy steaze, and it looked good on them, and on every single person that found it in their heart to move their feet last night…

To end her set, Claire Evans told the crowd in a beautiful direct chorus, “You can live anywhere you want!” And normally, I’d be the first to suggest Berlin, Reykjavik or Koh Kradan; but last night, I was happy, and proud to live on the West side of Los Angeles.

Touch Vinyl is going to continue to support this concert series and do our best to make tickets available for sale through the shop and through contests and giveaways. We hope that you’ll take our recommendation and check out the next one!

I love manners. I was raised to say please and thank you. Open doors. Offer your seat on the bus. Make good eye contact and give a firm hand shake.

There are rules to live by daily, but most easily forgotten in the party scene. Manners in nightlife?! Not exactly the first thing you think of. Alcohol, drugs, and hedonistic entitlement play a large part in the rudeness associated with going out in Los Angeles. Forget being rude to just cabbies and bartenders, I’ve seen some people be straight out rude to the talent!

If you are going to go out in this city and act a fool, you will be remembered as such. Like Mr. Thomas said above, good manners will get you further than any “good-on-paper” qualification you might have. However, this is not a guide on how to manipulate those around you to get ahead in status in the LA party scene (whatever that means - free booze I guess?).

What this guide and the #422 are really about is finding and participating in special music and nightlife experiences in LA. By following these few tips, I hope I can help you get the most out of your party experience. And maybe, along the way, it will help make the night a little nicer for the people who work so hard to give you that experience.
