When did you start DJing - and what or who were your early passions and influences?
In high school I listened to a lot of Madlib, Warp Records, and Björk. I started getting into dance music during college, first with Daft Punk's "Discovery", then through the Droid Behavior and Rhonda parties. Around 2009 my friend Eddie turned me on to artists like Daniele Baldelli and Hieroglyphic Being. I then fell in love with Italo, Acid House, and stuff coming out of the Hague. It wasn't until a few years ago that I bought a pair of 1200s and started collecting 12"s.
How many records do you own? What are some of your favorite artists/labels in your collection?
I own about 500 records. Have a lot of favorites so it's hard to choose... Clone, Forbidden Planet, and Viewlexx are a few of them.
How do you think the DJ game has changed since you’ve been in it? Where do you think it's going?
I think more people have become involved with it. As that happens more people get exposed to different forms of music, which is rad.
What is it that you love about the house music scene in LA? What could improve?
I love that the scene in LA is growing. A few years ago it seemed like you had to wait weeks for an underground party to happen, and now there are events every weekend. DJs are coming to LA from all over the U.S. and overseas through promoters like Far Away, The Black Lodge, Fine Time, and more. Underground artists are getting booked at larger venues too: Lot 613 just hosted a party with DVS1 and Nick Höppner. One area of improvement is getting more underground artists booked at legal venues with really good sound; I think it's already happening, and hopefully it'll continue to.
How did you come up with/arrange the tracks for the set that you spun at Touch?
They're records I had set aside while DJing at home. A mixture of old and new stuff.
What’s the next party you’re spinning and can we come?
I'm spinning at The Black Lodge on 9/17 alongside P.H.O.R.K., IVVY, and residents Force Placement and Kosmik. I'm also working on a new monthly event on the Westside. Looking forward to sharing more on that soon!
